After 59 enthralling contests, among 8 top teams, Indian Premier league is finally set to crown it’s champion. Mumbai Indians have already been into five IPL finals, the most by any team and there won’t be any butterflies in their stomach but for Delhi Capitals, it’s already a feat to cherish. There was also a time when Delhi was playing a knockout game and a loss could have ended their campaign even before the playoffs. Mumbai on the other had a consistent run in the league matches, winning 9 of the 14 matches. Mumbai as a team was dominant with each and every player of them contributing to their success. For Delhi, their batting didn’t perform exceptionally well, especially in the later stages of the tournament. Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stonis looked a class apart but rest of the batsmen were not quite up to the standard. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant were the biggest disappointment of all. The promotion of Marcus Stoinis however looks like a masterstroke that Delhi could have tried earlier. As a bowling unit Delhi is second best to Mumbai in terms of quality. Coming this Tuesday, there is nothing that separates the two teams on paper. While most people would like to pick Mumbai as a winner of this match, we would like to go in with Delhi Capitals. Not because they are playing any better cricket but from match one, this year looked like Delhi Capital’s year. This is the best they’ve ever played and they won’t let go this opportunity with ease.

From winning seven of the first nine matches to losing 4 games on the trot, Delhi’s IPL campaign has crashed big time. They now face a must a win situation where a loss will most probaly knock them out of the tournament. That’s how unpredictable cricket is. The problem for Delhi has been their batting as they’ve failed to cross the 150 run mark in the last three games. Neither Prithvi Shaw or Ajinkya Rahane has supported Shikhar Dhawan from the other end. Dhawan too has gone quite after his twin centuries. Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer, all have been below par. The bowlers couldn’t have done much with such low scores but both Rabada and Anrich Nortje looks exhausted. These are not good signs for Delhi Capitals

RCB on the other hand are no different. They too have lost three back to back games and need a win to make it through to the playoffs. Just like Delhi, RCB has been led down by their batting. Individually, all their players have some runs behind them but as a team they’ve failed to deliver collective performances. RCB’s strength is their batting and if that’s not firing, you know they’re in big trouble. Virat Kohli will need his big players to step up in this crunch situation.  In Morris, Chahal and Saini, RCB have a decent bowling attack but with dew around, bowlers are mostly out of the game. The batsmen need to give them additional 30-40 runs to defend. As of now, both teams are on par on paper but we would back Delhi to emerge victorious.

With just few matches left in the group stages, teams are battling hard to find a place in the top 4. It’s strange that even after 52 games, every team, apart from Chennai, every team can make it through to the playoffs. Kings XI Punjab’s 5 match winning streak was halted by a ruthless Rajasthan unit, who in the process have kept their hopes alive. Punjab now face a very tricky situation where even a win might not secure a place in the playoffs. The fourth entrance in the playoffs will most probably decided by the nut run rate and Punjab need to pull off a big win to get their net run rate better than the other teams. Punjab’s tournament has been a mixture of two extremes/ First they lost 5 back to back matches in the first half of the tournament then bounced back to win their next 5. Punjab hasn’t played bad cricket, even in the matches they’ve lost. Against Rajasthan they posted a decent total of 185 but bowling second was always going to be difficult on this wicket. Chris Gayle scored a magnificent 99 against Rajasthan and KL Rahul, as we all know is in the form of his life. Other players haven’t got much opportunity with the bat but are capable enough to demolish any bowling line up. Punjab is heavily dependent on Mohammed Shami for the wickets but will need their other bowlers to step up to the occasion.

For Chennai, they’re already knocked out of the tournament but can play a spoilsport in Punjab’s campaign. After a horrible first half, Chennai have fared decently in the second half, winning 3 of the 6 matches they’ve played. They’re coming back from two consecutive victories and would be looking to end their tournament on a high. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been the biggest positive for CSK in the last two games. Ambati Rayudu too looked good in the previous game. Jadeja down the order have been magnificent with the bat. However, the middle order looks bleak in MS Dhoni and N Jagadeesan. Moreover, there is no clarity on whether Faf du Plessis will feature in the game or not. As a bowling unit, Chennai brought in Ngidi who responded with a couple of wickets. RCB need to get those extra 30 runs to give their bowlers a fair chance.

Sunrisers Hyderabad on the other hand are coming back from a massive victory over Delhi Capitals, keeping their hopes alive for making it into the top 4. The victory over Delhi will give Hyderabad a lot of confidence and self-belief. The biggest positive for SRH will be the way David Warner played in that match. Warner was consistently among the runs for SRH but his strike rate must have been concerning for Hyderabad. The last game he looked like the David Warner we all are used to seeing, at his brutal best. Wriddhiman Shaha replaced Jonny Bairstow as an opener and what a move it turned out to be. He played a brutal knock off 87 in just 45 balls, paving way for a massive total. Manish Pandey too made a solid contribution. As a bowling unit, every one delivered as per the expectation.
